Pongal is one of the most important traditional festivals celebrated throughout Kallakurichi District. The celebration honours farmers, agriculture and the importance of cattle and nature. Cultural programmes, traditional games and community celebrations are commonly conducted during the festival period. The Kallakurichi Farmers Market has previously hosted Pongal celebrations involving farmers and consumers. The festival provides an opportunity to showcase Tamil agricultural traditions and local culture.
